The art of hand reconstruction has a long and varied history, oftentimes utilizing all the skills of a plastic surgeon.

Soft tissue repairs have usually been called “plastic surgery “although not necessarily the use of” plastic materials” (the term plastic is derived from Greek word “Plasticos” which means to form or shape). The goal of reconstructive hand surgery is to provide for return of hand function, followed by appearance.

As with the face and breast reconstructions, hand reconstructions may take several procedures to accomplish the maximal results. Hand therapy is also an integral part of the reconstructive process.
