What You Need to Know About Breast Implants

March 22, 2017
Fredric M. Barr

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgeries performed in the US today. In fact, in 2015 approximately 279,143 procedures were performed in the United States, making it the highest ranking cosmetic surgical procedure performed.

Augmentation mammoplasty (breast augmentation) is the surgery of choice for women who want to achieve a youthful breast and/or volume. Breast implants may also be sought by women who have undergone a mastectomy or breast injury.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of both silicone implants and saline implants as safe options for breast enhancement procedures. Both types of implants are used to increase fullness and projection of the breasts, improve symmetry of the breasts and balance out the patient’s figure.

Dr. Barr explains “My philosophy is to create a natural looking result…I believe that looking natural and refreshed on the outside makes us feel better on the inside.”

  • Incisions can be placed in the hidden fold or underneath where the breast meets the chest.
  • Saline implants are best placed under the muscle, while silicone implants can be placed either above or below the muscle. Placing the implant behind the muscle tends to give a more natural appearance with less chance of scar tissue developing around the implant.  A person’s medical history and anatomy will be discussed with Dr. Barr will determine what is right for you.
  • If you have significant breast droop, you may also require an additional breast lifting procedure.
  • Several pre-op visits are recommended so you can be sure of the implant you want. Bring a sports bra and plain tee shirt for implant typing and “sizing”.
  • After your breast augmentation, time off from work varies from three days to a few weeks depending on your job duties.
  • Patients who are obese, smoke, or a have a strong family history of breast cancer may not be good candidates as they have a higher risk of complications. Your surgeon will do a complete medical evaluation to determine if this type of surgery is recommended.  A medical clearance and mammograms are necessary to ensure a positive outcome.
  • Most women can still choose to breastfeed in the future. Women who have incisions in their underarms or crease of the breast usually do not have any difficulties breastfeeding. However, if the incision is near the areola, there is a small risk of damage to minor ducts during the surgery which could affect your ability to breastfeed.
