The lack of regulation in the plastic surgery industry has resulted in an increasing number of deaths due to unscrupulous, uncertified physicians practicing in unsafe office settings. Dr. Barr was recently interviewed by local news station WPBF 25 regarding a local woman, Stacey Hoffart, who was diagnosed with ALCL, the rare form of lymphoma now tied to breast implants. Hoffart was diagnosed with breast cancer eleven years ago, underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy and got saline breast implants as a part of her reconstructive surgery.

Recently, the cosmetic surgery community received important information regarding women with breast implants. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating a rare potential association between breast implants and a rare form of lymphoma.

Last year, more than 113,000 women underwent breast reduction surgery, that’s up 137 percent from 1997, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Among females younger than 20, it ranks second behind nose jobs, as the most requested plastic surgery, with 2,983 reductions done last year. (By comparison, 2,953 girls in the same age group surgically added to their cup size that year).
