Teenage “Chinplants” on the Rise

For the past 4 years, the cosmetic surgery industry has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Since 2011, there has been a steady upward trend, thanks to every demographic from men to seniors. The latest group contributing to the 71 percent increase in the industry in 2011 are teens seeking chin implants, or “chinplants,” before prom.

Every girl’s childhood dream is to be asked to their high school prom, to search for the perfect dress, make a visit to her salon and book a limo for what is hoped to be one of the most memorable nights of her life. But now, updos and manicures aren’t the only pre-prom beauty preparations teens are seeking. “At proms in the past, teens would line up for photographs and face the camera. But the rise of more informal images, captured during video chats or by smartphones when they are leaning over a buffet maybe, has shown them angles of their face they had not seen in a mirror,” explained Darrick Antell, a spokesman for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, to the Sunday Times.

As with weddings, the price the average American family pays for prom preparations has gone up – to a staggering $1,078 between the prom ticket to, the limo and the dress. However, this figure doesn’t reflect the plastic surgery procedures that some teens are opting for in anticipation of the big night.

Antell reports that the 45-minute “chinpant” costs anywhere from $3,500 to $7,500, which is at least three times what most families spend on prom. In addition to chin augmentations, many teenage girls are also opting for other cosmetic surgeries, including pinning back prominent ears for updos, which Antell refers to as “Clark Gable wings.” Otoplasty costs about the same as “chinplant” surgery.
