Restylane® Contour, a Breakthrough Injectable Dermal Filler, Is Now FDA-Approved for Cheek Augmentation

August 27, 2021
Fredric M. Barr

Restylane® Contour, an innovative injectable dermal filler, joins a series of hyaluronic acid fillers in the Restylane® brand. Galderma Laboratories developed the new contour filler, which received FDA approval in June 2021 for cheek augmentation and correction of midface contour deficiencies.

All Restylane® products help patients achieve a rejuvenated appearance by smoothing out frown lines and wrinkles, adding volume to strategic areas like the lips and cheeks, and giving extra firmness to the facial contour.

Restylane® Contour is the first filler available in the U.S. to contain XpresHAn Technology™. This distinct manufacturing process creates an injectable gel for the cheeks to create “dynamic expression,” according to Diane Gomez-Thinnes, Head of Galderma U.S.

Restylane® Dermal Fillers

Each Restylane® filler offers a slightly different result depending on the primary area it targets. Restylane® Contour’s crown function provides natural-looking, dynamic cheek augmentation.

Apart from Restylane® Contour, the Restylane brand includes the following products:

  • Restylane® Defyne: Smoothes out deep wrinkles and enhances chin contouring
  • Restylane® Silk: Treats fine laugh lines and creates lip augmentation
  • Restylane® Kysse: Results in impressive, targeted lip enhancement
  • Restylane® Refine: Reduces fine marionette lines and nasolabial folds

Galderma custom-tailors each formulation by different particle sizes:

  • smaller particles for fine facial wrinkles and delicate shaping
  • medium particles for moderate to severe wrinkles and folds
  • larger particles for multiple, deep lines and wrinkles

An expert plastic surgeon will know the subtle differences between the various Restylane® products and recommend the right fit for their patient, depending on the desired results.

How Restylane® Contour Works

Like other Restylane® products, Restylane® Contour harnesses the natural properties of hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body and fulfills several vital functions, one of which is helping collagen retain moisture.

With age, the natural production of hyaluronic acid slows down. At the same time, the amounts of collagen and elastin in the skin dwindle, making it lose moisture and plumpness. This process leads to the formation of wrinkles and gradual loss of facial contour.

Restylane® dermal fillers give the skin a hyaluronic acid lift that functions just like naturally produced HA: it restores moisture, smoothness, and volume to the treatment areas.

Why Plastic Surgeons Are So Excited About Restylane® Contour

Why does Restylane® Contour make cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists so excited? According to experts, the new product has several unique properties that make it perfect for cheek and midface area shaping.

Restylane® Contour offers:

  • An innovative XpresHAn technology that helps create an extra-smooth, flexible gel
  • Perfect integration with the skin
  • Natural-looking lift and volume
  • A dynamic filler that moves seamlessly with facial expressions

Plastic surgeons can inject Restylane® Contour during a procedure on its own or as a temporary solution for patients considering more permanent options like a facelift, fat grafting, or cheek implants.

Is Restylane® Contour Safe?

Restylane® Contour is FDA-approved to use in patients 21 and older. The first Restylane® products gained their FDA seal in 2003, leading to over 15 million procedures worldwide.

The new cheek filler received FDA approval based upon a multi-center Phase 3 clinical study evaluating 270 patients over 48 weeks. The study showed that Restylane® Contour “is safe and effective for cheek augmentation and the correction of midface contour deficiencies.” The filler’s use is supported by numerous medical research studies.

Like the rest of the brand’s injectable fillers, Restylane® Contour is highly safe if a cosmetic surgeon performs the procedure. The side effects, usually mild and temporary, include slight pain, bruising, and swelling.

However, Restylane® products may be unsafe for patients who:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Suffer from an immunocompromising condition
  • Have bacterial protein allergies
  • Take blood thinners
  • Are younger than 21

What to Expect from a Restylane® Contour Procedure

Restylane® injections require a short in-office procedure that typically involves very little pain. In most cases, the surgeon will use a topical anesthetic to ensure the patient remains comfortable throughout the treatment.

A single treatment may take up to 30 minutes, depending on the number of injections. The effects are usually quick and almost immediately visible.

Additionally, prolonged artificial tear use can be harmful if the eye drops contain preservatives. Over time, artificial tears can increase eye irritation and dryness.

Post-Procedure Home Care

Most patients need little to no downtime after their Restylane® treatment, although some pain, swelling, and redness around the injection site are normal. Cold packs can help with swelling and any sensitivity around the treatment area.

Nevertheless, patients who experience excessive pain, swelling, infection, or a suspected allergic reaction should contact their doctor immediately.

How Long Do Restylane® Contour Effects Last?

While Restylane® fillers offer amazing benefits, eventually, their effect will wear off. How long the procedure’s results may last depends on the specific treatment area, the injection volume, and the individual patient’s metabolism.

On average, the effects of a Restylane® procedure will endure 6 to 18 months, after which the patient may require a booster treatment.
