Orange County resident and full-time property manager Marie Kolstad is making headlines; but it’s not her business deals that make this mother of 12 newsworthy. At 83 years old, Ms. Kolstad is just one of thousands of seniors who are undergoing cosmetic surgery to improve their looks in their golden years.
Ms. Kolstad underwent a three-hour operation for breast enlargement and a breast lift. “Physically, I’m in good health, and I just feel like, why not take advantage of it?” Ms. Kolstad told the New York Times. “My mother lived a long time, and I’m just taking it for granted that that will happen to me. And I want my children to be proud of what I look like.” According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were 84,685 surgical procedures among patients age 65 and older in 2010. Although Ms. Kolstad is an octogenarian, she certainly doesn’t feel 83, saying that when you age, “your breasts go in one direction and your brain goes in another.”
No matter what your age, anyone in good physical and mental health who wants a little nip or tuck to improve their appearance should be able to go under the knife without judgment. There are a number of reasons why someone in their twilight years might choose to schedule a visit with their plastic surgeon: Some are still in the job market and are competing with younger employees; others are single and looking for a late-life partner and want to look their best. Seniors like Ms. Kolstad seek to match their physical appearance with how young they feel on the inside.
