Plastic Surgery Boom in China Creates Opportunities for Scammers

Recently, an article was published by 3News reporting on the latest plastic surgery boom in China and its implications, both positive and negative. The recent surge in cosmetic plastic surgery is due not so much to the lifted ban by China’s communist government in the 1980s, but more to the country’s growing spending power.

According to the Chinese Association of Plastic Aesthetics, roughly 3 million people underwent cosmetic surgery in China in 2009. The Association estimates the industry to be worth $220 million annually. The perception of beauty varies by country, culture and personal opinions and preferences, and in China, a more European look seems to be most popular. To achieve this, patients undergo double eyelid surgery, the most popular operation in the country. Runners up include nose enlargements, jawbone reshaping and liposuction of the cheeks. The article quotes one of China’s leading cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Shi Sanba in saying, “Foreigners think that the Chinese all have flat faces and small eyes, because of what our race looks like; but now that China is getting richer, people are no longer satisfied with their appearance. We think Westerners are more beautiful.”

Although Dr. Sanba is a popular and reputable surgeon, serving many of the country’s elite, the popularity and subsequent revenue generated by the new plastic surgery craze has attracted countless unqualified ‘plastic surgeons’ that promise to change lives. These immoral, unskilled and unqualified scammers are thought to have affected thousands of innocent Chinese people with botched operations that leave patients with irreversible scars, both physical and emotional.

Verifying a prospective surgeon’s credentials is essential before considering undergoing any cosmetic surgery procedure.
