For those who want something less dramatic than a full face lift, mini procedures can target specific areas of the face to give a more youthful appearance. “It’s not an alternative to a full face lift, it’s an option,” says Dr. Fredric Barr of Palm Beach Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, “It’s for people who don’t want to look like Extreme Makeover. I call it an unextreme makeover.”
Dr. Barr divides the face down to five potential areas for minis: the jowl and jawline, the neck, the cheek, the brow and the lower eyelid. A mini-necklift can give the neck a youthful contour. By making a small incision under the chin, fat is sculpted by mini-liposuction and some skin is removed for a younger, smoother neck.
A mini-cheek is often performed in combination with a mini-facelift to improve the mid-face area. The mini-cheek procedure removes skin excess and tightens muscle cover to accentuate and define the cheekbones.
To lift the eyebrows, a mini-browlift is performed to reposition the drooping brow. Hidden incisions are made either at or behind the lateral hairline depending on patient preferences, again to provide a more youthful and rested appearance.
Finally, a mini-eyelid procedure can reduce fatty bulges and bags in the lower eyelid area. All these mini procedures are done in-office with local anesthesia. There is no hospital required and many patients return to work the next day. The effects last for approximately 10 years.
Dr. Barr is among a small but growing group of surgeons who are scaling back procedures to accommodate patients. “The trend is toward less invasive, less prolonged procedures,” he says. Mini lifts offer more options for patients seeking a youthful appearance.
