Cosmetic Surgery for Men Continues to Rise

west palm beach plastic surgeryThe trend of men receiving plastic surgery continues to rise, as going under the knife carries less of a stigma and the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance increases. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 14.6 million cosmetic procedures were performed on males and females in the U.S. in 2012, up 5 percent from 2011. Additionally, 13 percent of American men underwent a cosmetic surgical procedure and 9 percent received minimally invasive cosmetic procedures in 2011 (data for 2012 is not yet available).

Physicians across the country say that men come in for cosmetic procedures for a variety of reasons, including pressure from their significant other to look better, the experience of a challenging life transition like a divorce, or competing with younger male co-workers. When it comes to motivation to improve their appearance, men don’t seem to be much different than women, although women are still the overwhelming majority of plastic surgery patients.

Perhaps the best proof that men are more comfortable with a nip and tuck is the fact that men’s cosmetic procedures have increased 106 percent since 1997. As the taboo of men receiving plastic surgery diminishes, this number is only expected to grow in future years. The top five cosmetic surgery procedures for men are liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, gynecomastia surgery and ear reshaping.

While men tend to differ from women when it comes to what they value most in a cosmetic procedure (less down time, pain and discomfort as opposed to an emphasis on the aesthetic outcome), their reasons for seeking self-improvement are quite similar.
