Liposuction: Is There a Way to Maintain Fat Loss?

If you’ve had liposuction or follow health news, you’ve probably known for some time that fat can return post-surgery, and to places other than where it was removed. A new study by Brazilian researchers now proves that when patients lose fat through liposuction, it tends to come back and gets redistributed deep within the abdomen, where it can cause more damage to health.

Whether you’ve had liposuction are have been seriously considering it, this can be a frightening finding. However, there’s good news regarding your ability to maintain lipo’s slimming effects, and TIME Magazine has the answer: “good old-fashioned exercise.” That’s right, liposuction is a great way to remove excess fat, but there’s no escaping your body’s need for exercise.

The study split a group of 36 healthy but inactive women aged 20 to 35, all of which volunteerd to have 2.5 to 3 lbs. of abdominal fat removed via liposuction. Six months post-op, half of the women regained (largely visceral) fat, the dangerous kind that increases the risk for both heart disease and diabetes. This group gained 10% more visceral fat than they’d had prior to surgery.

The other half of the women not only didn’t regain any fat, they ended up with less fat in their bodies overall, showed improved insulin sensitivity and were more physically fit. Why? Because they were randomly required to begin exercising after surgery. The four-month workout regimen that involved cardio and weight-lifting three times a week kept the dangerous fat at bay, improved their overall health and enabled them to retain the results of their liposuction surgery.

The moral of the study is that liposuction is still a safe and effective cosmetic procedure. As long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle and exercises regularly, results can last indefinitely.
